February Ministry Update

David’s Dialogues

February- Teaching, workshops, and more!

Dear Friend,

As busy as January was, February was probably even busier!  Many of my specific job roles are more active in the spring, and many of those events and activities fell in February, amid busy preparation for a trip to Honduras the first week of March.

At the beginning of February, we hosted our 3rd Annual Pancake Dinner as a fundraiser for the Honduras team.  We fixed pancakes for the 125 in attendance, held a silent auction, and executed a pancake speed eating contest!  It was a great chance for the team to bond, as well as raise $698.16 for the team’s expenses.  Later that same weekend, NLCF hosted its annual Super Bowl Party & Chili Cookoff.  This was an opportunity not only for fellowship, but outreach.  Many of the people who came I didn’t recognize!  This is a great thing, because that means our students are inviting their friends who are not part of Christian community, and may not know Jesus.  We’ve found that most people who accept Christ start by attending events like these and building friendships with people in our church.

The weekend of February 19th was quite busy!  That Sunday morning, I was thankful to have the chance to teach at our 11 am service in Squires Colonial Hall (check out the video here).  Now that I have some more teaching experience, I am getting more opportunities to teach; twice this semester!  I taught on how we can seek God’s Kingdom first through life balance, as part of our very practical “Renovate” series.

Later in the afternoon, I led the first Life After College workshop as part of the 2017 series.  This is the third year I’ve led this program, and we had 14 seniors come out to learn about financial topics including budgeting, debt management, insurance, credit, and taxes.  That Sunday night, we had our monthly men’s group discipleship time, MTO (More Than Overcomers), and then I led a Honduras Team trip details meeting later that night.  All those things made for a long, but fulfilling day!

Some other events that happened this month include a Women’s retreat in partnership with our community congregation, New Life, as well as a Lip Sync Battle fundraiser for our food pantry.  For the lip sync battle, students and staff put together various performances for a fun night for a good cause.  As you may remember, NLCF helps run an on-campus food pantry for students who simply cannot afford food in addition to tuition, rent, and other costs of being a student at Virginia Tech.  We had ~66 people come and raised $330 for 209 Manna Ministries.

Lastly, I had the chance to help coordinate the annual campus-wide worship event, called vtONE.  I have served on the leadership team for the past two years for this group, which has the vision to see students come to Jesus, and unite the body of Christ on campus across all the different campus ministries.  It has been a blessing to bridge boundaries and cooperate with other ministries for the sake of the Gospel!  The entire event was recorded here.

It is hard to believe that we will be leaving for Honduras tomorrow!  Our team of 14 will be leaving Blacksburg on Friday, March 3 and will return to Blacksburg on Sunday, March 12.  I am excited to share with you how the trip went next month!  Please be praying for our team’s health, as well as the lives we have the chance to impact in Danlí.

In Christ,
David
