February- Preparations for Honduras, Sunday Sermon, and more!
Dear Friend,
February, as always, was quite a busy month! Many of my specific roles on staff come to a peak during this time of year. We started off the month with a Pancake Dinner fundraiser for the Honduras team. It served as both a fundraiser to the team’s expenses, as well as a good team-builder. We raised $794.40 and had 155 people in attendance! That same weekend, we held a Super Bowl Party (photo, header) in order to provide a healthy environment where students could invite those outside Christian community into our space. There were ~94 people in attendance at this event, which also included a Chili Cookoff. At least if you weren’t excited about sports, you could get excited about food!

As part of our series, “Bad Ideas About God”, I got the opportunity to preach about the bad idea that “Science Disproves God”. As difficult a sermon as it was to prepare, I believe God was able to speak through it to bless our congregation. Check out the video here!
For a week in February, NLCF acted as a host site for the “To Our House” homeless program. Throughout the colder months of the year, various churches in the New River Valley host 10-15 homeless men and women nightly, while other churches provide meals and snacks. Several of our students helped drive the van, engage in conversation with the guests, as well as oversee the facilities while they were staying with us.

On Saturday, February 23rd we held the annual “Lip Sync Battle” fundraiser for the on-campus food pantry, 209 Manna Ministries. We partner with Wesley at Virginia Tech in order to provide a food pantry designed for students who cannot afford groceries on top of their rapidly rising academic costs. This entertaining evening provided a chance for community, as well as bonding together to raise money for a good cause. We were able to raise $1080!

I had the chance to lead and coordinate the start of our “Life After College” workshop series this month. The first workshop focused around finances, and we had several guest speakers share with our seniors and graduate students. I was excited to see a large group of 25-30 seniors in attendance with four speakers sharing.

Special Request: With several upcoming powerful opportunities for the Lord to move (campus-wide worship event, Honduras mission trip, and sermon series on the Armor of God), there has been some fairly widespread spiritual attack being felt on campus. I’ve seen it around our community and have been experiencing some of it myself. Walking with people who are experiencing incredible trial and pain has been a blessing, but also a challenge. We know Christ is victorious, but sometimes our shield of faith gets a little banged up. Please be praying for perseverance, as well as answered prayers and triumph on the other side of a challenging month.
I and the Honduras team have been busily preparing for the Honduras trip in just over a week! We’ve been nailing down travel details, ensuring all the donations and supplies are packed, and readying our hearts for what God wants to do in and through us that week. Thank you for your prayers and financial support. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without you.
In Christ,
David
